The Ninja AG301 vs Ninja EG201 comparison isn’t really about power — both reach 500°F and use Ninja’s Cyclonic Grilling Technology.
The real decision is whether the second-generation upgrades in the EG201 meaningfully improve everyday cooking.
I tested both grills in a real kitchen environment over several weeks, cooking steaks, chicken thighs, vegetables, and a whole chicken.
This guide focuses on real-world usability, not just spec-sheet differences.
Main Difference Between Ninja AG301 and EG201
The EG201 is a refined second-generation upgrade. It adds a true smoke-control system, a Broil function (6-in-1 vs 5-in-1),
redesigned airflow, and a domed lid that increases vertical clearance for thicker foods.
The AG301 remains popular because it delivers excellent grilling performance at a lower price,
but it lacks the EG201’s smoke management and guided GrillControl presets.

Real-World Testing: What Actually Changes
Vertical Clearance & Food Fit
This difference matters far more than the dimensions suggest.
When I cooked a 4 lb whole chicken in the EG201, the domed lid allowed better airflow and even browning.
The chicken never touched the heating element.
In the AG301, the same chicken fit — but tightly.
I had to reposition it midway through cooking, and airflow felt more restricted.
For thick steaks, roasts, or poultry, the EG201 is noticeably easier to use.
Smoke Control (Apartment Test)
Smoke is the biggest concern with indoor grills.
Using avocado oil and fatty ribeye steaks, the EG201 produced dramatically less visible smoke.
I could grill comfortably without opening windows or running an exhaust fan.
The AG301 produced more smoke under the same conditions.
It’s manageable, but in apartments or low-ventilation kitchens, the difference is obvious.
Noise & Comfort
Fan noise is rarely mentioned in reviews, but it matters.
The AG301 runs louder during grilling.
The EG201 is quieter and more comfortable in open-concept kitchens or evening cooking sessions.
Cleaning & Maintenance (Real Use)
After several roasts and high-fat cooks, I found the EG201’s removable splatter shield much easier to clean.
Being able to remove it and put it in the dishwasher saved time compared to scrubbing fixed element covers.
Both grills use ceramic non-stick parts, but the EG201 is simply less frustrating long-term.

Size & Countertop Impact
The AG301 has a more square footprint.
The EG201 is deeper front-to-back.
Keep in mind that while the AG301 is wider, the EG201 is deeper — make sure you have enough back-to-front counter space.
Who Should NOT Buy Either Grill?
- If you cook for large families (5+ people), both grills may feel undersized.
- If you want authentic charcoal or wood-smoke flavor, an outdoor grill is still superior.
- If counter depth is extremely limited, the EG201 may not fit comfortably.
Final Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?
After hands-on testing, the difference is clear.
The Ninja AG301 remains an excellent value indoor grill — compact, powerful, and affordable.
If budget and size matter most, it delivers reliable results.
The Ninja EG201 feels like a more mature second-generation product.
Better smoke control, quieter operation, faster heat recovery, Broil mode,
and extra vertical clearance make it easier and more enjoyable to use every day.
If the price difference is reasonable, the EG201 is the better long-term investment —
especially for apartments, open kitchens, and anyone cooking thicker cuts of meat.
